I am blogging my attempt to grow chilli peppers from seeds bought on eBay.

Day 91 - Relocation, Relocation.

Hi, I'm back!
I am sorry for the lack of recent posts, but moving house has meant that I have been unable to get on the net. But now i'm connected again.
The news is that i've moved a few of my chillies here with me. Again, all my windows are south facing, so I have placed my plants along all of my window sills. Another one of the pots spilled over in my car, but I carefully placed the soil back and hopefully the plant won't notice.

Day 77 - Seeding Is Believing.

Today I sowed some more seeds for the varieties that did not germinate very successfully in the January sowing. They are as follows.

  • Scotch Bonnet Red (7 seedlings)
  • Tepin (5 seedlings)
  • Cayenne Hot (3 seedlings)
  • Cayenne (13 seedlings)
  • Serrano (24 seedlings)

I re-used the Tupperware trays from the first sowing and am following much the same procedure.

Day 73 - Too Hot To Handle.

Apparently the world's hottest chilli has been grown in Dorset! Below is a link to the story.
Always good to see chillies in the news.

Day 72 - Varieties Are The Chilli Spice Of Life.

All the seeds that successfully germinated have now been re-potted with the exception of two barely developed seeds in the Serrano tray.

It has, therefore, been possible to do a quick check of all the varieties that have survived this far. They are as follows.

  • Tabasco (8 seedlings)
  • Ancho 101 (7 seedlings)
  • Early Jalapeno (8 seedlings)
  • Habanero Orange (5 seedlings)
  • Thai Bangkok Upright (6 seedlings) *1 died
  • Jalapeno (8 seedlings)
  • Scotch Bonnet (7 seedlings) *1 died
  • Rocoto Yellow (8 seedlings)
  • Hot Banana (7 seedlings)
  • Misc. (8 seedlings)
  • Cayenne Hot (2 seedlings)
  • Tepin (3 seedlings)
  • Anaheim (5 seedlings) *2 died
  • Prairie Fire (5 seedlings)
  • Cayenne Long Thin (2 seedlings)
  • Serrano (1 seedling)
  • Habanero Orange (5 seedlings) *1 died
  • Habanero Red (5 seedlings)
  • Purple Tiger (6 seedlings)

NB: I have absolutely no idea if the plants that I gave to my sister are still alive. She took one Anaheim and one Habanero Red.

Day 71 - Comparing The Height Of Chillies.

Here's a picture i took this morning of some Ancho 101 chilli plants. I took the pots from each of the four locations and placed them next to each other in order to compare their growth. This is a very unscientific test, since it is unlikely that the seedlings were the same size when first re-potted and placed in different rooms. Having said that, the results here tend to be consistent with what I have found with all my chilli varieties. In the picture, the chillies from left to right are from Locations 1-4 respectively. Oddly, I had generally put the healthiest seedlings in Location 1 and the weakest in Location 4. It seems that heat is the greatest catalyst for growth of chilli seedlings.

Day 70 - Chilli con Carnage.

Another Sunday and another afternoon spent re-potting little chilli seedlings. This time i attempted the task in the kitchen and made an almighty mess. All of the chilli plants have now been removed from their original (Tuppaware) seed trays. Today's plants included a very healthy Cayenne Long Thin seedling and several small, but well-developed Prairie Fire chilli plants. I also potted a fairly healthy Serrano seedling. I believe this is the only one of its variety that has survived. I'll have to do stock check tomorrow to see how many seedlings survived to this stage.
